Demand for release of Akhil Gogoi reverberates

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, July 27 - Hundreds of people from various walks of life and from various organizations today took part in the demonstration organized by Krishak Mukti Sangram Sammittee (KMSS) near the Bogibeel Bridge in support of their demand for the release of their leader Akhil Gogoi and other leaders who led the anti-CAA protests recently and also for immediate revocation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The protesters including women and elderly people formed a human chain along the road. They held placards and posters of Akhil Gogoi and raised slogans in support of their leader. They demanded release of all anti-CAA protesters, describing their arrest as vindictive, and politically motivated. The demonstration was led by the Bogibeel unit of KMSS.

Hemanta Konwar, joint secretary, KMSS, Dibrugarh district said that it is unfortunate and sheer shameful that Akhil Gogoi has been arrested for leading democratic protest by Sonowal-led government when several persons accused of mass corruption, genocide, swindling and other crimes are roaming around freely. Shankar Yadav, KMSS president of Bogibeel unit while demanding release of their chief advisor Akhil Gogoi said that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has adopted a destructive and fascist approach to suppress public dissent by arresting leaders on false cases.

Manab Adhikar Sangram Sammittee (MASS) leader Manoj Duwarah told newsmen that the government has hatched a conspiracy to harass and arrest Akhil Gogoi by lodging an FIR against him in various police stations. The government has not only trampled the democratic values of the country but has also breached human right, said Duwarah.
