NAGAON, Aug 4 - Nagaon is the central place of the State, but there are no remarkable institutions here. There was a proposal to establish the IIT at Misa here, after the signing of Assam Accord, but that was shifted to Guwahati later on. Now the Centre is going to establish an AIIMS in the State and it is natural that the common people of Nagaon expected that the proposed AIIMS will be established here, but they feared that their expectations may not materialise. That is why people under different banners came out to the streets demanding the establishment of the AIIMS at Nagaon.
On August 3, the Nagaon district unit of the AASU organised a human chain to press forth their demands. Nearly 1000 students, and citizens of the town took part in the programme. A memorandum, addressed to the Prime Minister was submitted through the Deputy Commissioner, Nagaon demanding establishment of the proposed AIIMS at Raha in Nagaon district
On August 1, a bike rally also organised at different places of Raha, Chaparmukh, Nagaon etc., in support of this demand. The programme was organised by the Bikers Club Raha
The AGP, BJP, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad and other organisations have also taken up different agitational programmes to press this demand.
