DIBRUGARH, Dec 13 - The Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) today staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner here in support of their demand for amendment to the Plantations Labour Act (PLA) 1951 and for implementation of the same in its totality.
The students body has alleged that due to the lack of proper implementation of the Plantations Labour Act 1951, the tea plantation workers remain exploited, neglected and oppressed. After 69 years of countrys Independence, no policy has been specifically framed for the uplift and welfare of the plantation workers and their dependants, ATTSA leaders said.
The demonstration was organised by the district unit of the ATTSA. The organisations president Rajen Kumar and Assistant General Secretary Lalit Mahali also took part in the demonstration. The students body submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Assistant Labour Commissioner, seeking his intervention in resolving various issues of the tea garden working communities.
Some of the demands of the ATTSA include hike in daily wage of the workers, training on use of ATMs, punishment to plantation managements for not depositing provident funds and ban on child labour etc.
