DUBAI, Sept 20: Marcus Stoinis last over heroics with both bat and ball was beautifully complemented by Kagiso Rabadas brilliant Super Over that ensured a thrilling opening round IPL victory for Delhi Capitals over Kings XI Punjab on Sunday.

Stoinis first blasted his way to a 21-ball-53 as his late assault ensured a decent 157 for 8 for Capitals with 57 coming off the last three overs. Stoinis hit seven fours and three sixes.

In reply, Capitals were in control for 15 overs before Mayank Agarwal (89 off 60 balls) nearly won it for KXIP before Stoinis came into the picture again with opposition needing one off three balls. The first one was a dot followed by wickets of Agarwal and Chris Jordan as the match ended in a tie and went into Super Over.

Rabada, a Super Over specialist then removed KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran off successive balls to keep an easy three run target off one over. Rishabh Pant got a couple and Mohammed Shami bowled a wide as Capitals got their hard earned two points.

Earlier, Stoinis (53) dragged Delhi Capitals to 157/8 with a blistering half century after a stellar show from Mohammed Shami (3/15), backed by valuable shifts put in by debutant Ravi Bishnoi (1/22) and Sheldon Cottrell (2/24) made it look like Kings XI Punjab may have a small target to chase in the second match of the season.

DC were on 127/7 at the end of the penultimate over of the innings at the Dubai International Stadium after which Stoinis smashed 26 runs off Chris Jordan in the final over. Additionally, the over included a wide and a dramatic final ball in which Stoinis was run out after taking a run but Jordan had overstepped.

Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada ran two runs off the free-hit to make 30 runs off the over. However, for the rest of the innings, it was KXIP on top with Shami making life difficult for the batsmen early on. He accounted for the wickets of opener Prithvi Shaw, Shimron Hetmyer and of DC captain Shreyas Iyer who acted as the anchor for much of his teams innings. Shreyas was on 39 off 32 balls and looking to get going when he fell to Shami in the latters last over.

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 157/8 (Marcus Stoinis 53, Shreyas Iyer 39; Mohammed Shami 3/15). Kings XI Punjab 157/8 (MA Agarwal 89, KL Rahul 21; R Ashwin 2/2, K Rabada 2/28, MP Stoinis 2/ 29). Super Over: Kings XI Punjab 2/2 (K Rabada 2/2). Delhi Capitals 3/0. Agencies
