Defunct streetlights add to citizens woes

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Oct 31 - Defunct streetlights on major stretches of Guwahati city have added to the woes of the residents. Even the authorities concerned have turned a blind eye to the issue.

Streetlights in many areas have remained defunct for over a month. Some of the affected areas include Guwahati Club, Silpukhuri, Chandmari, Bamunimaidam, Khanapara, Ulubari, Panbazar, Maligaon, Pandu, Kahilipara, Kalapahar and Uzan Bazar.

Despite streetlights being a basic necessity, we are deprived of the facility. The civic authorities are showing neglect in maintaining the streetlights. They should have streamlined the mechanism to ensure proper maintenance, a city resident said.

The defunct streetlights can lead to road accidents and other incidents during the night, another resident said.

On the other hand, several areas of the city do not have any facility of streetlights. Earlier in March, the residents had urged the Guwahati Municipal Corporation to repair the defunct streetlights of their areas, but no action was taken. The residents repaired the lights with contributions among themselves, a resident of Kahilipara area said.

We urge the authorities concerned to repair the defunct streetlights immediately for the benefit of the public, he added. There are more than 4,800 streetlights on the main roads of the city and nearly 9,500 on the lanes and bylanes.
