Deaths in Cachar trigger cholera scare

SILCHAR, Feb 11 - Even as the deaths of at least six patients in Dilkhush tea garden under Lakhipur subdivision in Cachar district due to cholera trigged panic among the people, the District Health Department has claimed that the situation is under control and precautionary measures are being taken to curb spread of the diseases.

�We are taking all possible measures to make the people living in the tea garden on the river bank. The water treatment plants are using disinfectants to purify the water and the situation is under control,� Dr Das said. Echoing the same, the Public Health Engineering Department has confirmed that adequate measures are being taken to spread awareness among the people.

On the other hand, Deputy Commissioner S Vishwanathan told this correspondent that a health mela was organised in Lakhipur to sensitise people on maintaining hygienic ways. The situation is very much under control.

Meanwhile, there are allegations of the practice of contaminating river water in dry season to catch fish which might have caused the outbreak of the disease. The Deputy Commissioner, however, said that there has been no such report made in this regard.
