DHUBRI, Aug 21 - Although water levels of all the rivers in Dhubri district are receding at a steady rate, the death toll in the devastating flood that hit the district in the second phase has risen to 10, according to sources in the district administration.
The second wave of flood that affected 11,32,262 people living in 682 villages of the district has been one of the most devastating flood the district has witnessed in the recent times. According to reports of the administration, people who died in the second wave of flood include � Sahida Khatun (6), Saleha Bewa (45), Kholidur Rahman (17), Jadulal Rabi Das (45), Ila Bose (65), Umesh Ch Ray (30), Khadija Khatun (8), Akinur Islam (02), Mengal Chowdhury (22) and Moheshwar Roy (12). Meanwhile, 52 villages are still under water and the number of affected people is 41,656.
While talking to this correspondent, Jintu Bora, Assistant Commissioner and also the Nodal Officer for flood management in the district, said that utmost care is being taken to check the losses caused by the flood. �Although we can�t in any manner make up the loss of families who have lost their kin in the flood, but we are trying to release the ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh as soon as possible.�
It was also informed that the ex-gratia payment of four families have already been distributed, while two other families will get the payment by Tuesday. The district administration will distribute the ex-gratia payments to the rest of the families after the administration receives the police reports.
Meanwhile, the water level of Brahmaputra has drastically receded and is flowing only a little above the danger level. The rivers Champamati, Gaurang, Gangadhar and Tipkai were flowing below their danger levels on Monday.
