Death centenary of MC Bordoloi observed

GUWAHATI, Oct 9 - The death centenary of Raibahadur Madhav Chandra Bordoloi, eminent Assamese administrator and socio-literary leader of the 19th century, was observed at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir under the auspices of the members of his family today.

The function was presided over by Dr Prabir Kumar Bordoloi, physician and grandson of Madhav Chandra Bordoloi. The convenor of the function, Prof Chitendra Chandra Bordoloi, explained the purpose of the function and welcomed the guests.

Addressing the function as the chief guest, senior journalist DN Chakravartty referred to the multifarious contributions of Bordoloi as one of the pioneer builders of modern Assam in the 19th century.

He said that besides being an efficient and dedicated administrator, Bordoloi was a great lover of the Vaishnava religion and Assamese literature. It was at his initiative and personal donation that the Madhav Kandali Ramayana was edited and brought out in printed form. He also published the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, besides composing a good number of poems.

In addition to being a Deputy Commissioner, Chakravartty added, Bordoloi was also an accredited examiner and question setter of Calcutta University. Chakravartty suggested that the large family of Bordoloi which now comprises 800 members, take the initiative to perpetuate the memory of the great son of Assam.

Basanta Bordoloi, Sushen Sarma, Dr Hem Sarma, Pranab Changkatati, Chandan Baruah and Konika Bordoloi, Neelakshi Bordoloi, Kalpana Barthakur also spoke. Chakravartty released a book by Nilotpala Sarma on the life of Bordoloi.
