GUWAHATI, June 20 - Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, cultural doyen of Assam and a revolutionary, was remembered across the State today through the observance of Rabha Divas marking his 50th death anniversary.
In the city, various organisations and educational institutions observed the day in a befitting manner.
It was observed on the open stage of Assam Jatiya Bidyalay, Noonmati. The programme began with a recitation performed by some of the students of the school under the guidance of senior teacher Juthika Patowary.
After this, the ceremonial lamp was lighted by the academic officer of the school, Narendra Mohan Goswami. Floral tributes were offered in front of the portrait of Rabha.
Students and staff paid homage to former academic director of the school, Krishna Kumar Bora and a former student of the school, the late Raktabh Dutta Choudhury, on their death anniversary today.
This was followed by a chorus performed by some of the students on a Bishnu Rabha song. The significance of the day was conveyed to the audience by Anouska Priyam, a student of Class XII.
Noted singer Pankaj Bordoloi, who was present at the function as chief guest, was felicitated by the school authority. In his speech, Bordoloi dwelt on the works of the cultural icon. He called for regular practice and analysis of �Jyoti Sangeet� and �Rabha Sangeet� among the students of today�s generation and also appealed to them not to get swayed by the so-called modern trend of music forgetting their roots in the soil. He also performed some of the evergreen songs of Bishnu Prasad Rabha.
Khyati Trishna Das (Class VI), Chayanika Sarma and Trishna Deka (Class IX) performed solo songs during the programme. A wall magazine named Kakator Topola was unveiled by the Rector of the school, Ranjit Narayan Deka. This was followed by a beautiful group dance presented by some of the students. Senior teacher of the school Juri Goswami delivered a speech illuminating the multifarious life experiences of the legendary figure and the impact of the same on his classic songs and poems.
Jyotismita Kaushik and Dikam Baishya, students of Class XII, presented a duet.
The programme, in which the members of the school management committee and all the teaching and non-teaching staff, students and other guests were present, concluded with a vote of thanks by Principal of the school Ghanashyam Medhi.
Anindita Gogoi (Class IX) and Srizon Baruah (Class VIII) anchored the programme. The convenor of the programme was Trishna Kalita, a senior teacher of the school.
The All Guwahati Students� Union (AGSU) observed the day at Swahid Nyas, Uzanbazar, with a daylong programme.
A number of students from schools and colleges of the city participated in the event.
Madhya Guwahati Sahitya Sabha in association with Brahmaputra Sahitya Sabha and Prantashree Sahitya Sabha observed the day at KC Das Commerce College with varied programmes.
The Mahila Samiti of Hengrabari Housing Colony also observed the day with various cultural items.
