Death anniv tribute to �Bihogi Kobi� Raghunath Choudhary

GUWAHATI, Nov 19 - The 52nd death anniversary of Raghunath Choudhary, popularly known as �Bihogi Kobi�, was observed on Monday under the joint auspices of Bihogi Kobi Smriti Rakhya Samity and NGO Collage at the Guwahati Press Club here.

Educationist Dr R Goswami, while inaugurating the function, dwelt at length on the qualities of Choudhary as a poet, thinker, social reformer and president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

Dr Purna Bhattacharya, distinguished poet and educationist, while releasing a book on �Bihogi Kobi�, described him as the trendsetter of romantic poetry in Assamese literature.

Noted writer Kishori Mohan Pathak in his speech said that Choudhary introduced a new style in Assamese poetry.

Presiding over the meeting, senior journalist DN Chakravartty said that Sadori and Dahikotora were the most outstanding poetic creations of Choudhary. He had described the sweet tales of a variety of birds of Assam besides praising the beauty of innumerable flowers available in the gardens, forests and farmlands of Assam.

Choudhary�s Bohagir Biya, Tajmahal, Golap and Gowa He Ebar Mur Priya Bihangini find place among the finest Assamese poetry. Although not highly educated, Choudhary was a revolutionary thinker, reformer and a great humanist. He was the president of the Assam branch of IPTA, besides being closely associated with several socio-cultural organisations.

Dr Banikanta Kakati compared some of the best poetic works of Choudhary with some of the best works of Wordsworth, Coleridge and Tennyson. Choudhary was associated with Jonaki and was editor of Jayanti and Surabhi.
