NEW DELHI, Oct 23 In the face of a fresh standoff with the United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS), Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram has invited Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi to join him on Monday to resolve the deadlock.
A tripartite meeting scheduled on Monday with the Karbi militant group was slated to pave the way for signing of a peace accord. The meeting was crucial and the Home Ministry was expected to clinch the deal.
Sources said that the Chief Minister, who is here to take part in the National Development Council (NDC) meeting on Saturday, was called by Chidambaram and requested him to meet on October 24 to discuss the proposed peace agreement. Top officials of the State Government have already arrived in the capital.
The fresh standoff is over the UPDS demand for formula for setting up of a neutral administration of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in the interim period between the signing of the peace accord and the holding of the next election.
In an email message, the militant outfit has threatened to desist from signing the proposed peace agreement with the Centre unless the agreed formula was ensured.
The KAAC election are likely on second week of December and the Congress hoping for comeback may not be too keen on an interim arrangement.
The local unit of the Congress has opposed the demand for an interim government. President of Karbi Anglong District Congress committee (KADCC) Sum Ronghang, has recently said that interim government demanded by the UPDS is not at all applicable in the democratic country. If UPDS is interested to rule the KAAC then they should first win in the forthcoming KAAC election.
Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has convened two back to back meeting with the insurgent outfits of Assam. Tomorrow, it has scheduled a meeting with UPDS and on October 25, a tripartite meeting with ULFA is scheduled to fine tune the modalities of ceasefire.
