GUWAHATI, Nov 7 - Strange are the ways of the Assam Government as a person, who died more than a couple of years back, is also promoted by the Health Department, while, the latest promotion list issued by the Department, also figures names of a few doctors who submitted their resignations.
Official sources told The Assam Tribune that in case of death of any person, the head of the institution or department immediately informs the Government about the incident. But the Government's lack of sincerity came to the forefront when a doctor, who passed away more than two years back, was promoted recently.
The Government recently promoted a number of doctors working in the medical colleges of the State and the list figured the name of a doctor who died in October, 2016. Dr Dhrubajyoti Das, a registrar in the Anesthesia department of Barpeta Medical College died two years back but the latest list of promotions figured his name and as per the list, he has been "promoted as assistant professor" in the same college.
The incident proved that there is lack of coordination in the Government. The Principal of the college should have immediately informed the Government about the death of the doctor and official sources admitted that the information must have been misplaced in Dispur. Moreover, the promotion lists are cleared by a committee comprising officials from the Health and other concerned Departments, while, the Principals of the medical colleges are also invited to the meeting. This also raised questions on whether the Principal of Barpeta Medical College was invited to the meeting and whether he had pointed out that Dr Das is no longer alive.
Meanwhile, in recent times with a number of private hospitals are coming up in Guwahati, and a good number of doctors working in the medical colleges of the State have resigned, which may seriously affect the State health care services in the days to come.
