DC peeved with slow pace of anti-erosion measures

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, July 1 � The Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Jayant Narlikar visited the erosion-hit Dikrong riverbank areas and inspected the anti-erosion measures at Ahomgaon in Bihpuria recently.

He was visibly upset with the slow pace of work and reprimanded the engineers concerned. The DC also told the contractors who were present during the visit to complete the work within a week�s time or face the holding up of funds meant for the anti-erosion measures. He also warned the engineers and contractors concerned of punitive action if any brack in the embankment of Dikrong river was found due to faulty work.

The DC also visited the Laluk-Bihpuria road damaged by the recent floods. Narlikar asked the contractors to complete the construction of that road at the earliest. He also inspected the ongoing construction work of a new PHC in Bihpuria. He was accompanied by ADC, Rajvee Hussain, Bihpuria Revenue Circle Officer, Satyajeet Chetia and Joint Director of Health, Dr JC Doley during the visit.

Seminar on mega dams: A national seminar sponsored by the University Grants Commission on mega dams in the North East was held recently in Panigaon Om Prakash Dinodia College, Lakhimpur.

The seminar on the topic � Large and mega dams in highly seismic prone North East India: Temple or burial ground � was inaugurated by Biswa Baruah, former president in-charge of Asam Sahitya Sabha. The welcome address was delivered by the Principal of the college Birendra Kumar Saikia. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Dr Binay Kumar Nath, Director of Higher Education, Govt. of Assam, as the guest of honour. Dr Chandan Sharma, Associate Professor of Tezpur University, Chief Geologist of NHPC�s Gerukamukh Project NK Mathur, Assistant Manager (Ecology) Brahmeswar Kumar, coordinator of conservationist group Arannyak, Parthajyoti Das attended the seminar as resource persons. Various technical sessions were chaired by Brajen Sharma Baruah, ex-Principal of Lakhimpur Commerce College, Dr Prabal Saikia, agri-scientist RARC-Lakhimpur and Dr Pushpa Gogoi. Several papers were presented in the seminar, which was attended by college teachers, conservation groups and students.
