DC directs status quo

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 12 - The Kamrup Metro district administration today held a meeting with a delegation representing the fishing community of nine villages located around the Deepor Beel.

The meeting, held at the DC office here, was chaired by Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro.

Various issues, including protection and preservation of the Deepor Beel, were discussed during the meeting.

Dr Angamuthu said that a high-level meeting, involving senior State government officials, will be held after Bhogali Bihu to discuss issues raised by the delegation of fishermen, including their right to community fishing in the Deepor Beel.

He urged the locals to maintain status quo in the Deepor Beel till then.

The issue of fishing in the Deepor Beel has become a matter of contention between the district administration and local villagers of the area. The City Police had earlier this month imposed Section 144 in the area and prohibited community fishing, which had led to dissatisfaction among the locals.

Senior officials from the district administration, police and forest department were present during todays meeting.
