MANGALDAI, Feb 24 - Kharupetia Police on Thursday picked up two persons on suspicion in connection with a jewellery snatching case in Kharupetia town on Wednesday night.

Talking to this Correspondent over phone, Sub-Inspector Chandan Goswami informed that police carried out several raids in suspected localities under the leadership of Darrang Superintendent of Police Amrit Kumar Bhuyan and picked up two persons for interrogation.

After examining the footage of CC TVs, we are now hopeful of busting the crime racket, Sub-Inspector Goswami maintained.

According to an FIR lodged by one Mithu Saha, owner of Kalpana Jewellery, a bag filled with jewellery worth Rs 1.20 lakh was snatched away by two motorcycle-borne youths when he was proceeding home after closing his shop at around 9 pm.

Meanwhile, both Ahezuddin Ahmed (30), a resident of Chokora Basti in Dalgaon and Jeherul Ali ( 28) @Abdur Rajjak, a resident of Marawachak in Sipajhar, who were arrested on Tuesday night by Darrang Police on charge of sedition and pilferage of fuel, were remanded to judicial custody.

Dalgaon youth Ahezuddin reportedly spread derogatory comments about India and the Prime Minister and also supported Pakistan through his social media Facebook account. This was the second case within two days in the district where youths have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody on charges of sedition.

On the other hand, Jeherul was arrested in a crackdown against the illegal racket of pilferage of diesel and petrol in a roadside dhaba at Dumunichoki under Sipajhar Police Station.

In the raid on Tuesday night led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarter), Darrang, Mamoni Hazarika, around 250 litres of diesel stored illegally was seized from the dhaba run by one Babul Ali of Marawachak.

However, the owner of the dhaba managed to escape under the cover of darkness, police said. This is the second incident within a month when a racket involving pilferage of fuel from a roadside dhaba has been detected by police.

Earlier, police seized nearly 1,500 litres of diesel from an illegal storage at Besimari under Dalgaon Police Station.
