Darrang Drug Inspector Office staff held for graft

MANGALDAI, Jan 7 - Sleuths of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department of Assam Police on Friday night arrested an employee of the District Drug Inspector Office, Darrang on charges of taking bribe.

The accused government employee was identified as Nasiur Rahman (54), an Office Assistant and a resident of Ward No. 2 of Mangaldai town. He allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 as bribe from one Ajgar Ali, a resident of Bechimari of the district for issuing a wholesale drug license. Accordingly, complainant Ajgar Ali with the help of sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Department laid a trap and offered a cash amount of Rs 25,000 to the employee in the ground floor of the rented office building.

Though the accused Rahman allegedly received the cash from the complainant, but suspecting some foul play he threw it away and tried to flee. However, police personnel in plain clothes nabbed him. During initial interrogation, the accused Rahman reportedly refused to receive the bribe amount.

The operation which lasted till 9 pm also witnessed raiding the house of the accused before registering Case No. 1/ 2019 at the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department under the provision of the Prevention of Corruption Act and arrest of the accused Nasiur Rahman as informed by Amit Kumar Hojai, Deputy Superintendent of Police, who led the operation. The accused was later taken to Guwahati from Mangaldai.
