Dainik Asam scribe assaulted by gamblers

MIRZA, Nov 16 - Borihat-based correspondent of Dainik Asam, Milon Mahanta, who is also the Mirza-based correspondent of Asomiya Pratidin, was brutally assaulted by a group of gamblers around 11.30 am yesterday at Tiniali Chowk near Mirza, resulting in the scribe sustaining serious physical injuries.

The gamblers allegedly attacked the journalist for reporting against gambling during the Diwali festival.

The gamblers allegedly tied Mahanta to an electric post and attempted to kill him.

In the meantime, Palasbari police rushed to the spot and rescued the scribe from the clutches of his would-be assassins in association with the local public.

The culprits involved in the incident have been identified as Sanjay Thakuria, Budu Thakuria and Biswajit Das, all of Tiniali near Mirza.

A case (No.515/20 under Section 341/324/325/34) was registered at the Palasbari Police Station in this connection against the three culprits, though no arrest has been made so far till the time of filing this report.

Several organisations, including South Kamrup Press Club, EP Media Forum of South Kamrup, Dakshin Kamrup Journalists� Association, Chhaygaon Press Club, Amranga Borihat Nagarik Mancha, Sachetan Nagarik Mancha, AASU�s South Kamrup unit, etc., have demanded arrest of the culprits and speedy legal action.
