GUWAHATI, Aug 4 Dainik Asam, a sister concern of The Assam Tribune, entered its 49th year today. The first issue of the daily was published on August 4, 1965.
Over the decades, Dainik Asam has been playing a stellar role in highlighting problems and issues on diverse fronts such as socio-economic, political, developmental, etc., of the State, and moulding public opinion in the process. During the six-year Assam Movement from 1979 to 1985, it acted as a torchbearer of Assamese nationalism.
The very first issue of the newspaper came up with an in-depth report of the States perennial problem of flood and erosion, calling for declaring it a national problem in view of the complexities of the problem and the magnitude of the devastations. Damage to cropland, property and loss of human lives by floods apart, erosion has over the decades eroded seven per cent of the States landmass.
