Cyber forensic training lab coming up soon

GUWAHATI, Oct 28 � To fight the growing threat emerging from the misuse of cyber space, Assam Police�s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is expected to be armed with a cyber forensic training lab to be run by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing(C-DAC), besides a cyber crime investigation laboratory within this financial year.

This was informed by Mukesh Sahai, Additional Director General of Police (CID) while talking to media persons on the sideline of a day-long seminar on cyber forensics being organized C-DAC in association with Assam Police.

The seminar was organized as the part of project �Development of Cyber Forensics Training facility for Northeastern States� to be implemented by C-DAC.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, Sahai, referring to the rise in the incidents of cyber crime, informed that the website of Silchar University was hacked around 10 days back.

�We have registered around 30 cases in the last one year or so and we have managed to solve more than 50 per cent of the cases,� he said.

Dr Amit Choudhury, additional director, C-DAC while dwelling on the growing menace of cyber crime, informed that around 10 more cyber forensic laboratories are coming up in the country.

He also favoured the need to sensitize not only the police force but also the members of the judiciary, besides students, who are falling victim to this crime, knowingly and unknowingly.

Assam DGP Sankar Baruah, who attended the inaugural session as the chief guest, urged the police personnel to use information technology as a powerful tool by getting acquainted with the know-how of computer operation.

�It would be mandatory on the part of each and every police personnel from top to bottom to know about basic computer operation once the Crime and Criminal Networking System comes in place,� he stated.

Dr Kulendu Pathak, former Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, also spoke on the occasion.
