By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Sept 7 - United Christian Forum North East India (UCFNEI), an apex body of the Christians in North East India in collaboration with Hope Charitable Foundation (HCF), organised a webinar on human trafficking with special emphasis on social media here on September 5, said a press release issued today.

Resource person Mathew Joseph, an artificial intelligence expert and alumnus of the University of Chicago, spoke on artificial intelligence in social media and its impact on children.

Mathew spoke on deep learning (DL), deep text, face recognition, recommendations, natural language processing, hateful accounts, and cropping tools. If our children and adults are not guided there are dangers. Make sure that our kids are aware of the techniques prevalent in social media platforms. If such responsibility is not exercised, we can be exposed to cyber-predators who also use tactics like false marketing and online bullying. Parents need to keep their eyes and ears open as cyber bullying is a huge concern, sometimes even resulting in self-harm or suicide, added Mathew.

Another resource person Dr M Devasitham spoke on cyber trafficking. He is the head of strategic development, IJM Chennai. He mainly presented case studies of cyber trafficking during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the methods employed for cyber trafficking are apparently appealing, but can deceive children and make them victims.

Responding to the presentations, Tanya Brooks, a PhD scholar from Tezpur University, underlined the need to develop a healthy partnership between parents and teachers in parenthood.

The group discussions moderated by Prof Lalrindiki Ralte from Aizawl Theological College Mizoram, emphasised the need to create more awareness on the issues of parenting of children with digital exposure. The concluding remarks were made by Dr BJ Syiemlieh from Shillong, who reiterated the need to continue with the campaign against human trafficking in North East India.

The moderators of the sessions included Dr Syiemlieh and Prof Ralte, the release added.
