C�wealth Express to reach city today

GUWAHATI, July 18 � Do you know that India�s first computer required a space of 300 sq feet? Or that India has the second largest number of telephone subscribers in the world? Or that it has the lowest mobile phone rates in the world?

These and many more fascinating revelations will come alive as the Commonwealth Express � an exposition-on-wheels tracing the evolution of information technology and with the mandate of creating mass awareness about its role in everyday life � reaches the Kamakhya railway station tomorrow. It will remain stationed there for two days, enabling visitors to have a glimpse of the exciting progress the country has made on the front.

The train will be open for viewers from 9 am to 7 pm on these two days. Its next destination is Mariyani. The Commonwealth Express had started its journey from New Delhi on June 24 and will traverse across 49 cities of the country.

Conceived by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, in association with the Indian Railways, the Commonwealth Express will provide an exposure of the nation�s success story in communication and information technology in its diverse facets to every visitor. It is also expected to extend a platform for convergence to the entrepreneurs and tomorrow�s business leaders. It will further showcase the technological capabilities of various constituents of the Department of Information Technology, including the National Informatics Centre, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Software Technology Parks of India, and the National Internet Exchange of India.
