Customs officials among four found guilty

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 - A CBI court here has convicted four persons, including two senior Customs officials and as many traders, for promoting illegal export of banned drugs to Bangladesh.

Accused Sagar Kumar Dutta, the then Superintendent (Disposal) and Mukti Pada Acharjee, the then Inspector in Office of Deputy Commissioner, Customs Division, Karimganj entered into criminal conspiracy with each other and with Chhanda Deb, proprietor of M/s Kathia Baba Drug Distributor and Arijit Bhattacharjee, proprietor of M/s Wing Drug Distributor and abetted illegal exports to Bangladesh.

The Customs officials had disposed of huge number of phensedyle bottles, specified goods and Schedule H drugs through fake auction by preparing fake and forged bid lists abusing their official position. They violating all laid down instructions and promoted illegal export of the banned drugs to Bangladesh and neighbouring states and districts.

CBI judge Soneka Bora found all the accused persons guilty and sentenced accused Sagar Kumar Dutta and Muktipada Acharjee to undergo rigorous imprisonment for four years and to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 each for offence u/s 13(2) r/w 13 (1)(d) of P.C. Act, 1988.

The other accused will undergo an imprisonment of one year along with a fine.
