GUWAHATI, April 18 Curtains have come down on the Rongali Bihu celebrations in the city with the varied and colourful Bihu programmes concluding in most of the bihutolis.

The bihutolis reverberated with Bihu songs and dance as they hosted the celebrations with programmes lasting three to five days beginning on Thursday. It had been the perfect Bihu ambience during the celebrations, with people coming out in large numbers from the evening onwards to be a part of the festivities that continued late into the night.

While the city wore a deserted look during the day in the past few days with less vehicles plying on the roads, the nights were colourful and vibrant, as the Bihu revellers descended on the streets in hordes to join the merriment. Most of the roads close to the Bihu venues witnessed traffic congestion but for a change no one was complaining.

The only blemish in the festivities had been the unruly and offensive behaviour of a section of youths in inebriated condition. There have also been reports of fisticuffs and physical clashes among such drunken youths. Rash driving of motorbikes at breakneck speed by some youths also terrorized people in the night, and there had been several road accident cases during the Bihu nights mostly attributed to negligent driving. Many aggrieved people alleged that police remained a silent spectator during such uncalled-for situations.

The Guwahai Bihu Sanmilani the oldest Bihu organisers of the city hosted a five-day Bihu programme which would end late tonight at the Latasil ground. The celebrations included diverse cultural activities including the widely-appreciated contests on Bihu Rani, Bihu Kunwori and Bihu Samragyi. In addition, there was a group competition on Jeng Bihu.

The four-day celebrations at the 32-year-old Gitanagar Bihu Sanmilan concluded yesterday. A number of artistes, new as well as established, including Queen Das, JP Das, Kula Baruah, Charu Gohain and Malobika Bora performed at the popular Bihu venue. A medley of Bihu dances and other cultural presentations drew big appreciating crowds on all the four days of the festivities that also included contests on Bihu Kunwari and Bihu hussori. The Bar-Bihuwati contest was held on the last day.

At the 57-year-old Paschim Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan, Bharalumukh, the curtains came down yesterday. The festivities had started on Thursday and drew big crowds on all the days. Cultural events apart, sports and games added to the Bihu festivities.

The Pub-Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan in its 50th year celebrated the occasion at the Assam Engineering Institute playground with a three-day programmed since Thursday. The cultural performances featured popular artistes from the State and outside, including several much-admired artistes of yesteryears like Kula Baruah, JP Das and Queen Das.

Folk dances, Bihu dances and other attractions enhanced the Bihu flavour during the festivities that included Srestha Nasoni and Asam Bihuwoti contests.

A number of sports competitions were part of the celebrations. The womens wing of the Sanmilan organised a number of programmes including various song contests.

In its 33rd year, the Madhya-Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani celebrated the occasion with a three-day programme since April 14 in association with the Bharatiya Sanskritik Sambandh Parishad at Nabagraha Kali Mandir Field, Silpukhuri. State-level competitions of Bihu hussori, bihuwoti and on Assamese modern and traditional songs were part of the cultural items presented on the occasion.
