Current AGP leadership autocratic, a club of 7/8 men

By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, March 18 - Niren Sharma, one of the members expelled from the Central executive committee of the AGP for slamming the party leadership recently for forging an alliance with the BJP in the parliamentary polls, today charged party leaders with being autocratic and reducing the party to a club of seven/eight members to further their self interest.

Sharma, a founder member of AGP and a former AASU leader during the anti-foreigner agitation, was expelled from the Central executive yesterday by a party notification issued by AGP general secretary Dr Kamala Kanta Kalita on charges of indulging in anti-party activities. He has been also suspended from primary membership for a year.

Sharma along with several other party leaders and workers of the district on Friday lambasted the party leadership in a meeting held in the AGPJorhat district unit office here over the tie-up for Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing media persons at the Jorhat Press Club, Sharma alleged that about seven to eight leaders of the Central executive committee had led the party to the path of destruction in order to fulfil their own selfish goals .

A few top leaders of AGP have now reduced the party that was formed by the people from all sections of Assam after 855 youths sacrificed their lives in the students agitation, just to a club of seven to eight persons, only to materialise their self-interests, Sharma observed.

Alleging that the inner-party democracy was being wiped out within the party, Sharma said the Central ledership was functioning in an autocratic manner stiffling the voices of the rank and file of the party across the State.

Sharma said he and his colleague Haresh Bhuyan, another Central executive committee member of AGP, have been expelled for speaking the truth and opposing the poll alliance decision which he said was arbitrary.

He charged that AGPs poll alliance with the BJP was against the wishes of the majority of people of the State and also the ideals of the party as the BJP had got CAB passed in the Lok Sabha and has committed to passed it in the Rajya Sabha too, if it comes to power.

Having alliance with a party which has gone against the Assam Accord and was for settling foreigners on the basis of religion is not in accordance with our partys ideals and so the February 20 Central executive committee meeting in Guwahati had decided not to have any kind of poll tie-up with BJP, Sharma said.

In view of the maladies plaguing the party in the present scenario, Sharma made an appeal to all party workers across the State who felt that leadership was going against the wishes of the people and the partys ideals, to stay away from the ongoing election process.

He said that party workers and leaders in the grassroots should not work for the alliance with the saffron party and urged the AGP supporters and those who belive in regionalism, to vote as per their conscience.

He then read out a statement issued by Haresh Bhuyan, another member expelled from the Central executive committee as Bhuyan was out of station.

Bhuyan while castigating the current leadership of the AGP, hoped that party workers across the State will protest against the present set of leaders and show them the door and restore AGP and its ideals.
