By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Sept 21 - Academic education is not the only goal that students should try to achieve. Active participation in different cultural activities is also very necessary for their allround development. This was stated by the State Governor and Chancellor of the Gauhati University, PB Acharya, while attending the ongoing inter-college youth festival of the Gauhati University today.

Acharya lauded the role of the Gauhati University in creating a knowledge-based society and urged the varsity fraternity to be in the forefront not only in the academic field but also in facilitating cultural exchange with leading universities.

The GU Chancellor announced a package of Rs one lakh for the University to develop infrastructure facilities, including sports goods, in all its 10 hostels. He said that there should be more hostels in the University, which may be named after the famous personalities of Assam. A few hostels may also be named after different tribal communities of the region, he said.

The Governor also spoke about the reasons behind the unemployment problem in the State and urged the Gauhati University to come up with some innovative ideas to improve the situation. He further said that the primary education for every student should be given in his or her mother tongue.

Acharya also said that it is important for all universities to have the photographs of great personalities on display for inspiring the students. He wound up by saying that a university should not merely be a centre of knowledge; it should also be a centre for development.
