Crowd funding by a family of four raises Rs 5 lakh for Assam flood relief

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Sept 1 - A family of four Assamese people staying in Bengaluru has managed to collect Rs 5 lakh through a crowd funding campaign for flood relief for their beloved State.

Nawab Dilaweez Hasan, Nazmi Rafique Hasan, Deenaz Raisinghani and Nadeem Rafique moved by the plight of the flood-hit people had planned to send in a small personal contribution to help. However, they contemplated that instead of sending small amounts as personal contributions, it would make a greater impact if they could somehow send a substantial amount to people or agencies that are working on the ground. The idea of starting a fundraiser was born at that moment! Their intention was to move away from the narrative of blaming the government or media and do what they could through their own efforts.

On July 16, 2020, they decided to partner with Ketto.org which is Indias premier crowd funding platform. They then decided to tie up with Rapid Response India, the countrys first Disaster Relief NGO and a Registered Charity (w/No: 201300153) under Indian Trusts Act 1882.

The team set a goal of Rs 50,000 to be collected in 45 days. Using WhatsApp and Instagram, they started reaching out to their family, friends and acquaintances to help contribute and spread the word. In less than 14 hours, they got an overwhelming response and exceeded their goal. In the next 48 hours, they collected Rs 1 lakh. Slowly, through various campaigns on social media, they raised Rs five lakh till August 25 solely through an ordinary citizen driven crowd funding, without any celebrity endorsements.

This entire contribution, minus the payment gateway charges will go to Rapid Response to help support the relief and rehabilitation work that is currently under way in some of Assams worst affected areas.

It may be mentioned that this year the annual floods in Assam, which are a yearly occurrence, have caused wide-scale devastation. As per latest reports more than 57 lakh (5.7 million) people have been impacted. One hundred and thirteen people have been killed directly due to floods and another 26 lives lost due to landslides. Thirty districts out of 33 in Assam impacting 5, 378 villages and a total of 2,65,601.60 hectares of crop area were affected directly as a result of this deluge. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has further worsened the plight of the affected communities, the family stated in a press release.
