Crossing Sarabbhati intersection a nightmare for commuters

By A Correspondent

GUWAHATI, June 20 - One of the busiest spots in the city is the Sarabbhati intersection, where vehicles moving from all directions create a chaotic situation. The intersection connects Ulubari, BK Kakati Road, Kalapahar, Athgaon and Paltan Bazar. Traffic congestion is at its peak during office hours. Even though there usually are enough traffic police personnel manning the crossing, they can but let go vehicles on one lane at a time, leading to backing up of vehicles on other lanes.

The number of vehicles is way more than the narrow roads can accommodate, while the continuous honking is not at all music to the ears.

People have to understand that everybody is out there ready to leave once the green signal is given, but until then they have to wait patiently. Moving in through the gaps to come up in front creates trouble for fellow drivers who have already been waiting in the long line, said Rishiraj Das, a daily commuter.

The road remains congested every day, mostly during daytime with cars and bikes trying to overtake each other. The line of vehicles often stretches out to such a distance that it becomes difficult for the vehicles waiting on other lanes to move. Cars and bikes parked in a wrong manner adds to the problem.

It is a real hassle for the students living here, or those who have to pass through this crossing, especially during exams. I have to leave home by 8.30 am to make sure I reach college in time, said a student.

This intersection is known for traffic congestion, which makes people take a different route or leave home early in order to avoid getting stuck in a jam. For the ones who have to pass through the area, there really isnt an option other than patiently waiting for the jam to ease out.
