Crime probe in State to get major facelift

By SANJOY RAY

GUWAHATI, June 9 Scientific investigation is all set to get a major facelift in Assam!

To counter improved psychology of modern-day criminals, the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory will soon have in its fold two of the most trusted weapons of investigation.

While a Psychology Unit will be set up to carry out narco-analysis tests and brain mapping, the Directorate is also on the verge of having a separate Speech Laboratory (Voice Analysis) in its Kahilapara premises.

Significantly, the Directorate is expected to take assistance from experts from Gujarat Forensic Science University, which is rated to be the best in the business.

Criminals nowadays have become professional enough to bypass tricky questions posed during investigation. In case of high-profile and sensitive acts of crime, these units would prove very essential, a senior forensic scientist of the Directorate told The Assam Tribune.

Gujarat Forensic University is doing a commendable job, especially in the field of narco-analysis, brain mapping and voice biometrics. The new units in Assam will be in line of system already placed there, he pointed out.

On the legal implication of conducting tests like narco analysis, a top criminal lawyer said, The Supreme Court of India in the year 2010 had ruled that that narco analysis test on an accused cannot be done without obtaining his consent.

A senior Assam Police official told this reporter that both the units are required in select cases, but wherever they are put to use, they yield positive results for the investigators.

He also stated that Assam sends voice samples to labs in Chandigarh or Hyderabad for forensic examination.

As part of the overhaul initiative, two district mobile forensic science laboratories will also be set up at Silchar and Bongaigaon shortly for an improved crime scene management.
