GUWAHATI, Nov 14 - For Mamoni Raisam Goswami creating literature was a serious practice. She always wrote with utmost dedication which resulted in a good number of great works in Assamese literature.
Intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain made this remark while releasing a collection of short stories penned by Jnanpith Award winner Mamoni Raisam Goswami on the occasion of her 77th birth anniversary here today.
The book titled Magnoliya, is a compilation of 28 short stories edited by Sabita Sarmah and jointly published by South-East Asia Ramayan Research Centre and Purbayon Publication.
Dr Gohain said the short stories included in the book are good examples of juvenilia.
�I think publishing the writings of Dr Goswami, which were penned during early days of her life, is a very good initiative. As a writer, her feelings were always different and extraordinary. She had also done a lot of labour as a writer,� he said.
Dr Gohain said that there is a need to preserve the handwritten scripts of Mamoni Raisam Goswami, which would be a good source for all to study the writing style of the writer. He also proposed an essay writing competition in memory of the writer.
Sabita Sarmah, chairperson of the South-East Asia Ramayan Research Centre and younger sister of Mamoni Raisam Goswami in the preface of the book stated that after the death of her elder sister she had discovered the short stories inside a paper box found in the garage of the writer.
These stories were penned by the internationally acclaimed writer during her early days and comprise both reality and imagination. The stories were published during 1954-1962 in various newspapers and magazines.
Speaking on the occasion, former bureaucrat and writer Swapnanil Barua said Mamoni Raisam Goswami was the last �star� of Assamese short story writers of recent times.
