Crackdown on drug peddling, 4 held

GUWAHATI, May 8 - Sleuths of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Guwahati has arrested four persons and seized 2.06 kilograms of morphine and 54.6 kilograms of opium here late last evening.

The consignment of drugs, which was sourced at Manipur, was to be transported to Bihar when the sleuths, acting on a tip-off, intercepted the peddlers near Ulubari area here.

The arrested persons have been identified as Abdul Kalam, Md Mazibur Rahman, Sohrab Khan and Ram Milan.

Sources said that the consignment was in the process of being transported to Bihar in an SUV which had secret chambers in it. The gang, according to sources, was operating for the last one year or so. While Abdul Kalam was the supplier, Sohrab was the one who was to take control of the narcotics.

�The gang was caught red-handed when they were about to load the consignment in the SUV,� sources said. While Abdul Kalam and Md Mazibur Rahman hail from Manipur, Sohrab and Ram Milan are from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh respectively.

Various law enforcing agencies in the State have been making a concerted effort to wipe out those involved in peddling drugs since the last couple of weeks. Even the Chief Minister had instructed the agencies concerned to deal with the menace with utmost priority.

Bongaigaon Correspondent adds: The New Bongaigaon Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested another suspected drug peddler identified as Rahizuddin Ali (28) last night from Kukarpar under Sarthebari Police Station in Barpeta district.

Based on the confession of Hridayananda Pathak, who has been in custody of New Bongaigaon GRP for the last two days in connection with drug peddling, the GRP team led by its officer in-charge Munin Dutta nabbed Rahizuddin from his residence with the help of Barpeta police.
