CPM opposes power tariff hike

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, June 12 The State unit of the CPI-M has opposed the proposed 13 paise hike in the power tariff of Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) being effected from July 1 next.

The party has demanded immediate revocation of the order to effect the said hike in the power tariff and to take urgent measures to boost up power generation in the State instead.

In a statement here, the CPI-M State unit has alleged that the anti-people power policy of the Central Government has led to the present crisis in the power sector of the country. This has also imposed a growing load of tariff on the common power consumers.

On the other hand, the Assam Government has failed to utilize the Asian Development Bank (ADB) properly to raise its domestic power generation. This has made the State dependent on the Central sector power generating agencies to meet 53 per cent of its power demand.

This is also responsible for the rise in the power tariff in Assam. The APDCL has been pleading for increasing the power tariff further within the current year, despite a 13 paise hike in the tariff for per unit of power being approved of as fuel surcharge cost, said the party.
