CPM leader Bajuban Riyon passes away

AGARTALA, Feb 22 - Bajuban Riyon (79), a seven-time MP and former minister of Tripura, passed away at the ILS Hospitals last night.

The veteran CPM leader, who had kept himself away from hectic political activities for the last few years, fell ill last night and was shifted to the hospital where he breathed his last.

Born on 13 March, 1941, at Bakafa under Santir Bazar subdivision, Riyon began his political career as a Congress member and won an election way back in 1976. Later, he switched over to the CPI(M).

During his political career spanning 47 years, he was the Agriculture Minister of the first Left Front Government in 1978. He also went on to win as many as seven Lok Sabha elections.

Riyon served the CPI(M) in various capacities � as member of the party�s central committee and the State party secretariat and GMP president. He remained a member of the CPI(M) State committee till his demise.
