AGARTALA, Nov 10 - The Opposition CPI (M) has demanded early elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The States lone tribal council has been under the Governors Rule as the scheduled elections could not be held so far due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Governors Rule is scheduled to expire on November 15.

Since the TTAADC is a Constitutional body, we want the Government to hold the elections immediately. Unfortunately, the Government has not announced its plan for the autonomous tribal council till date, said CPI (M)s State secretary Gautam Das today.

The Government has not informed the political parties and the people about its plan for the council. If the Bihar Assembly elections and the bypolls to other States can take place, what is preventing the holding of the tribal council polls in Tripura? Das told reporters here.

Das also expressed apprehension about militant activities in the trial areas ahead of the elections. Militant outfits have been serving extortion notices to villagers at Gandacherra, Amarpur and Jirania. Recently, three ultras were arrested at Panisagar in North Tripura district. The Government is hiding inputs on the interrogation of the three nabbed militants, he alleged.
