CPI supports demand for removal of Manipur varsity VC

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, June 7 - The Manipur State Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has announced its support to the ongoing agitation launched by the Manipur University students, demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey for alleged vitiation of the academic atmosphere.

The varsity students have alleged that the VC has failed to take any initiative for the development of the institution, leaving the university in a paralysed state. Demanding replacement of the VC, the students have launched an indefinite shutdown since May 31.

Addressing a press conference here today, CPI State secretary L Sotinkumar said that his party would fully support the agitation. Sotinkumar alleged that the university has lost its academic atmosphere and become a platform of the BJP, adding that the VC is always on tour.

CPI national executive member Dr M Nara alleged that this was happening in other institutions and universities too after political appointment of institution heads and VCs.

Dr Nara stated that the CPI would observe a protest day on June 20 against the price hike of fuels. The party unit is demanding rollback of all hikes in excise duty as part of a nationwide protest. The CPI will also launch an awareness campaign to expose the alleged misdeeds of the four-year rule of the Modi Government, in August.

Responding to a question on the partys preparation for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the State, Dr Nara said, We will try to prevent the BJP from coming to power.

Meanwhile, the indefinite shutdown of the varsity by the student community entered the seventh day on Thursday, paralysing the normal functioning of all departments and centres. The administrative block of the university and the VCs office continue to remain in a locked state.
