SIVASAGAR, June 4 � The Communist Party of India, while rejecting any demand for secession from India, has demanded unconditional talks between ULFA and the Centre in the wake of the overwhelming desire for peace negotiation expressed through various media by the people of Assam.
The party expressed thanks to the Sanmilita Jatiya Abhibartan for holding the convention to evolve ways of solving the crisis. Addressing reporters, Promod Gogoi, veteran CPI said that since April 7 , 1979 as many as 12,000 people lost their lives in Assam causing irreparable loss to the Assamese national life, culture, politics and economy and therefore negotiations on the demands raised by ULFA should be initiated at an early date like the GoI did with the NSCN leaders in 1997.
The CPI leader said that the GoI acceeded to the demands for separate constitutional status to Jammu & Kashmir under (A)370 and Nagaland under A371(a) and Assam truly needs a special status at this juncture.
Assam produces 51 per cent tea, a sizeable portion of crude oil , besides coal and other resources including valuable uranium but remains poor and exploited causing frustration among the people which needs be addressed early .
In another release, signed by Dharma Boruah, secretary, CPI Sivasagar district committee, the party condemned the obstruction created by Nagaland government on exploration and drilling activities of ONGC in the Geleky area of Assam. It called upon Assam Government to take all possible measures to protect the land and people of the area .
The party also demanded early implementation of Brahmaputra dyke construction from Desungmukh to Dekhoumukh as per estimate and called upon the government to be vigilant on the modes of implementation. Faulty construction of the same will bring disaster to the entire Konwarpur, Nagarmahal, Betbari and Silakuti mouzas, it stated. The party called upon all sections to press for the demands for construction of a modern technological institute in Sivasagar.
