Cows day out at Gobindapur Satra!

PATACHARKUCHI, April 27 � A cow-show competition was held at Gobindapur Satra on the first day of Rongali Bihu, i.e Goru Bihu with an aim to add something new to the conventional festivities that mark the occasion.

The Gobindapur Satra Rongali Bihu Sanmilani arranged the competition for the third consecutive time with immense support from the farmers of the locality. The Gobindapur Satra courtyard was decorated with an attractive ramp for the competition. The ramp was decorated with traditional plough, harrow, japi, yoke, hook, bamboo basket and other agricultural implements along with fishing contrivances generally used by the farmers.

The competition was formally declared open by Dr Malaya Barman, MLA of Patacharkuchi, while Dr Manoranjan Das lighted earthern lamps. Both of them praised the organisers for such an innovative attempt. The Barpeta district veterinary department also extended cooperation in the endeavour.

Dr Sunil Sarma, Dr Bhumidhar Das and Dr Hitesh Pathak, all the veterinary doctors, attended as judges in the competition. Dilip Baruah, vice-president of Barpeta Zila Parishad, Puspanjali Das, circle officer, Bajali revenue circle, Pabitra Narayan Oza, district veterinary officer, Barpeta and Dr Nayanjit Deka, veterinary doctor World Bank Cell graced the occasion.

A large number of farmers took part in the competition with their cows and bulls. They took their cows and bulls neat and clean, decorated with colourful cloth, Gamocha and garland made out of bringle and gourd. They were asked to bring their cows or bulls through the ramp with the well coming music of dhol, pepa, gagana played by a group of local Bihu team.

The courtyard of Gobindapur was througed by a zealous audience while the judge asked the participant various questions about care bestowed on their cattle, and whether vaccination was administered on time for various diseases besides scientific causes behind some traditional rituals observed during Goru Bihu.

Among the participants, Gagan Kalita bagged the first position, Jati Kalita second and Sailen Kalita adjudged secured the third position respectively.

The Bihu Samilani also arranged other programmes for Rongali Bihu celebration which was concluded on April 24. They arranged various competitions like, �Rasi Tana Khel� go as you like, shot put, etc. Traditional �nam prasanga�, dance competition was also included to mark the entire celebration by the committee.
