COVID-19 warrior commits suicide

TEZPUR, Dec 22 - Sensation prevails here after a temporary worker engaged for COVID-19 related work under the Health department in Sonitpur district committed suicide. The COVID-19 warrior, identified as Amrit Bahadur Domai, was an inhabitant of Gereki area of Tezpur town.

It is to be mentioned here that along with rest of the State, Sonitpur district Health department had also temporarily engaged 54 cleaners and 15 supervisers in different quarantine centres and COVID care centres to deal with the COVID-19 induced situation. But the most regrettable thing is that these temporary workers have not received even a single penny till date.

It is learnt that after getting frustrated Amrit Bahadur Domai committed suicide yesterday leading to a sensational situation here. In protest against the government and the Health department�s indifferent attitude towards the COVID-19 warriors, the COVID-19 Warrior Association supported by Tezpur AASU today staged a strong protest at TMCH and office of the Joint Director of Health, Sonitpur by taking out a protest march with the body of the deceased person.

Holding Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma responsible for the incident, the protesters have given a deadline of two days to the government to solve the problem and give compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the deceased. Else they will start a vigorous democratic protest against the Health department and the State government.
