COVID-19 shadow on Tripura I-Day celebrations

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Aug 12 - The COVID-19 pandemic with the rising death toll in Tripura, will have an adverse impact on the celebration of the ensuing Independence Day here on August 15.

A lesser crowd will be allowed entry into the parade ground this year.

The coronavirus-induced conditions will take away a lot of sheen from the Independence Day celebrations.

Meanwhile, the State Government has already initiated preparations for proper observance of the occasion sans crowds.

The main function will be held on the Assam Rifles ground. However, most of the programmes have been curtailed. The traditional cultural show will be pre-recorded and screened during the Independence Day function.

The Assam Rifles ground is being prepared for the occasion and a temporary dais is being erected. Official sources said that a few platoons each comprising 40 to 45 jawans would take part in the ritual parade.

Only ten platoons of Tripura Police, TSR and Assam Rifles will take part in the parade. Rehearsals are currently taking place on the Assam Rifles ground.
