COVID-19 death toll in State touches 88

GUWAHATI, July 28 - Two more persons lost their lives due to COVID-19 on Tuesday, taking the tally to 88. Both the patients � Dulu Rani Sarkar (70) and Hemanta Buragohain (50) � hailed from Kamrup Metro and were admitted at GMCH. Meanwhile, Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar also tested positive on Tuesday. Laskar, an MLA from Sonai constituency, requested the people who came in contact with him in the last few days to get themselves tested.

A total of 1,371 new COVID-19 cases were detected in the State on Tuesday, of which 295 were from Kamrup (Metro) and 221 from Kamrup. The total cases in the State now stand at 34,947.

A total of 1,216 patients were discharged on Tuesday, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The number of discharged patients went up to 26,618, while there are still 8,238 active patients.

Sarma also said the State has achieved another milestone in COVID-19 testing with the figure crossing eight lakhs. The first COVID-19 test was done on February 7.

The Health Department intensified the random testing drive in Guwahati, with special attention to areas inhabited by vulnerable population.

�For the last three days, the rate of new infection has slowed down in Guwahati, which is an encouraging trend,� Health Department sources said.

�However, the next few weeks would be crucial for all of us in terms of breaking the chain of the virus. We cannot be complacent at any cost,� sources added.

Sarma, who also holds the portfolio of Public Works Department (PWD) today also reviewed the status of various ongoing projects in the State.
