Covid-19 cases in State rise to 1561

GUWAHATI, June 2 - A doctor and five more air travelers were among 28 persons who tested positive for COVID-19 today in the State. With this, Assam�s coronavirus tally went up to 1561, on a day when as many as 53 patients were also discharged.

Dr Dipak Chandra Das, in charge of the Sualkuchi block PHC, tested positive for the virus today. He was part of the doctor�s panel at the Singimari Covid Hospital.

Official sources said Dr Das was asymptomatic and his samples were tested as part of a protocol for all health personnel. He was evacuated from his Sualkuchi residence to GMCH.

Contact tracing of the doctor is being done and samples of all such people, including at least seven other doctors, have been collected.

Currently, there are 79 patients at the Singimari covid hospital.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had also visited the Singimari Model Hospital yesterday and had met doctors and staff. However, it was not clear if he will have to go for the COVID-19 test.

Meanwhile, the Health department expects a spike in cases in the next two/ three days, with the arrival of returnees in three trains to Barak Valley and Hojai.

�The test results of these returnees will start coming from tomorrow, and we expect a spike of cases in the next few days,� Health officials said.

On the other hand, DRDO has approved the proposal of the Defence Research Laboratory, Tezpur to set up a COVID-19 testing facility.
