By Correspondent

AGARTALA, May 28 - There has been no let-up in the rise of COVID-19 cases in Tripura with Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb confirming detection of 10 new cases last night.

It has taken the total number of positive cases in the State to 242, causing panic among the people.

1020 samples have been tested today for COVID-19, out of which 10 people detected #POSITIVE. 5 returnees from Chennai & Bangalore, 4 returnees from Mumbai & 1 railway pantry staff, the Chief Minister tweeted last night.

Of 242 positive cases in Tripura, 74 are active cases. As many as 165 patients have been discharged from hospitals and three have migrated out of the State.

Stranded people returning to the State in large numbers, non-compliance with social distancing norms, etc., are believed to be responsible for the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases in the State.

Meanwhile, 129 persons, who were stranded in Bangladesh due to the lockdown, have returned to the State through the Akhaura check post in two buses today.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das accompanied them to the Akhaura check post, while MP Pratima Bhaumik welcomed the returnees.

On their arrival, they were subjected to thermal scanning and their swab samples were collected for COVID-19 test. They were later taken to the SIPRD where they will be quarantined till their test results are received.

The Government is taking all possible steps to contain the spread of coronavirus in the State and the situation is still under control, the MP said.
