Court notices over botched eye surgeries

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 11 - The Gauhati High Court today issued notices to the State Government, Joint Director of Health (Guwahati), MMCH Chief Medical Officer and Director of Sankaradeva Nethralatya on the recent five botched eye surgeries at the MMCH.

The Court, after hearing the counsels for the victims and the Health Department, has asked the respondents to reply on January 6, the date fixed for next hearing.

The Court issued notices after all the five victims of the MMCH tragedy today filed a writ application in the Gauhati High Court, which came up before the Court of Justice Hrishikesh Roy.

In the said application, the victims have sought monetary compensation, action against the erring doctor/doctors and better treatment for the malady faced by them.

The Court observed that the health condition of the victims should be assessed by the State Government, and if necessary, better treatment should be facilitated.

Further, during the course of the hearing, the counsel for the Health Department stated before the Court that a public interest litigation on the same subject has also been filed, following which the Court directed the registry to place the writ petition and the PIL in question before Chief Justice (acting) of the Court so that the matter may be heard analogously.
