Counting of votes for Shella bypoll today

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Oct 23 - Counting of votes for the Shella bypoll will begin at 7 am tomorrow, which will decide the fate of six candidates in the fray.

United Democratic Partys Balajiedkupar Synrem is one of the strong contenders. He is the son of former Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy, who was the sitting MLA of the constituency at the time of his demise on July 28, that necessitated the bypoll.

Synrems contest was mainly with Congress candidate Batyngshain Laitmon Ryngnga.

The other candidates include two Independents Grace Kharpuri and Komen Laitmon. Kharpuri is also a member of the District Council.

Mosjo Rockfeller Wanswett was the Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) candidate, while Joshua Warjri contested on a BJP ticket.

The NPP did not put up any candidate and instead extended support to the UDP.
