Cottons identity lost: Gogoi

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 3 - Disapproving the move to upgrade the Cotton College to a university, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi insisted that the identity of the heritage institution should have been preserved.

Cotton College is the only heritage college... the only centre of excellence in the State. The institution has made immense contribution in the fields of culture, literature, academics, etc. It has now lost its identity... it is not appropriate. The government should have kept its identity as a heritage institution intact, on the lines of St Stephens College and Ramjas College in Delhi, Gogoi opined.

He said the decision to set up the Cotton College State University was taken by his government, but the previous government had kept Cotton College as a separate entity under the university.
