Cotton University to begin 3-yr BA in Liberal Arts prog

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, May 1 - Cotton University has announced the launch of its new BA in Liberal Arts programme in addition to its traditional three-year bachelors degree course. It will begin in the next academic session with an intake capacity of 50 students.

The programme is designed in line with the draft National Education Policy (2019) which emphasises Liberal Arts as the futuristic substitute for the existing traditional BA course in higher education institutions.

In case of BA in Liberal Arts, the students will learn economics, English, political science and many other subjects in the first year (first and second semesters). It is only in the second year (third semester) that a student will choose his/her major subject from among the subjects studied in the first year. The major subject will be studied for the next two years intensively along with elective subjects and skill enhancement subjects.

In the traditional BA degree course, students either have a major subject such as BA with economics major or BA with English major. A student can also pursue BA degree without any subject as major.

Vice Chancellor of Cotton University Professor Bhabesh Chandra Goswami said, This new three-year BA programme is the first of its kind in Assam and North East India. I have a strong feeling that in the coming future, Liberal Arts as an academic programme will be in high demand. With introduction of the new programme, Cotton University envisions itself as a pioneering national educational institute that offers Liberal Arts under a public education system, in accordance with the norms and regulations of the UGC.

He further said, The new BA in Liberal Arts programme will offer students an opportunity to study a broad range of subjects while developing specialised knowledge in their major discipline. With a Liberal Arts degree, students can branch out into different careers such as academics, managing foreign affairs and embassies, policy research and development, healthcare administration, social work, civil services, client servicing, marketing, banking and a lot more.
