Cotton students engage in brawl

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 12 - Police has received multiple complaints with contradictory versions in connection with the brawl involving a group of students of Cotton College, and drivers of private cab service and some autorickshaw drivers late last night near Guwahati railway station.

The last nights incident also resulted in the injury of a number of persons, including journalists who went to the spot to cover the confrontation. A woman police personnel was also allegedly manhandled.

While the Cotton College Union Society in a press release blamed it on the driver of a private taxi service, a section of locals and journalists alleged that the students of Cotton College resorted to hooliganism near the railway station and even damaged vehicles, besides attacking the journalists.

Meanwhile, the Education Minister has sought a reply from the college authority in this regard. Guwahati Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwal also took up the matter with the college authority and assured a fair probe into the incident.

It all started with some heated exchange of words between the drivers of a taxi and autorickshaws. But the scene took ugly turn when some Cotton College students intervened and started abusing the cab driver, an eyewitness said.

Police said that they have received cross FIRs and investigation is on to identify the culprits. The driver of the private cab service alleged that the students were under the influence of alcohol.

The injured journalist Afnur Ali was rushed to hospital for treatment.
