Cotton students bag best team award in Manash Borah debate

GUWAHATI, June 1 - The Cotton University team comprising Tridip Bhagawati and Jajna Pratim Saikia bagged the best team award at the 10th Manash Borah Memorial North East Inter Institutional Debating Competition held on May 31 at Pragjyoti ITA, Machkhowa, Guwahati. More than twenty teams from across the State participated in the hard-fought competition.

The Cotton University team won the Manash Borah Memorial Running Trophy.

Bijit Kalita from the Institute of Media and Management Studies, Guwahati, got the first prize, while Bishal Priyam Deka from Govt Ayurvedic College and Soham Banerjee from Arya Vidyapeeth College got the second and third prizes respectively.

The annual competition is sponsored by the Manash Borah Memorial Trust (MBMT) and organised by Old Boys Association, Sainik School Goalpara (OBASSG), the apex body of the alumni of Sainik School Goalpara (SSG). Manash Borah was an alumnus of SSG and was very instrumental in the formation of OBASSG. The competition has completed a decade of organization (2010-2019).

The competition was inaugurated by Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary, former Governor of Meghalaya and former Director General of BSF and NSG. In his speech he complimented the MBMT and the OBASSG for organising such an excellent competition for the youths of the region. To mark the completion of ten years, he also released a commemorative booklet published by the organisers.

The competition was conducted by Prof Gayatree Goswamee from Gauhati University as the speaker. The competition was judged by Partha Pratim Hazarika, Assistant Editor, The Assam Tribune; Dr Sangeeta Rani Kalita, Assistant Professor, BRM Govt Law College and Hiranku Hazarika, research scholar, Tezpur University. It needs mention that the Hiranku Hazarika was the best debater in the inaugural edition in 2010.

The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Capt (Indian Navy) Edwin Jothirajan, Principal of SSG.
