Cotton Registrar accused of threat and blackmail denies charge

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Sept 4 - Cotton University Registrar Diganta Kumar Das has been accused by a section of former and present students of the varsity of resorting to threats and blackmail in the face of a letter he had received from the Chancellor Prof Jagdish Mukhi a charge the Registrar has denied.

According to a statement, a delegation of former and present students of the institution met Prof Mukhi recently and reported various issues related to the infrastructure of the institution and anomalies that had allegedly taken place during the recent appointments to various posts.

Responding to the issues raised by the delegation, Prof Mukhi on August 28 wrote to the Vice Chancellor of the University and directed him to submit a report within 15 days.

The section of students alleged that the Registrar, after receiving the letter from the Chancellor, made phone calls to the parents of two members of the delegation and threatened them.

However, reacting to the allegations, Das said, I called up the parents of those two students to discuss about the problems they have been facing in the University. But the allegation of threat and blackmail is totally baseless.

Meanwhile, general secretary of the Cotton University Students Union Pranjal Kalita stated that he was not aware about the development as no student had reported the matter to the Union.
