Correct NRC top priority: Govt

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 9 - Updating the NRC correctly is the topmost priority of the State Government. This was stated by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to a question raised by BJP MLA Bhabesh Kalita, Patowary said that an accurate NRC is what the people of the State had been aspiring for since long and the Government is committed towards fulfilling this aspiration of the people.

Patowary said that there had been a few instances wherein some illegal migrants had submitted forged documents and that cases have already been registered in this connection.

We have stepped up vigil to detect such cases of forged documents being submitted by illegal migrants, said Patowary mentioning that monthly progress report on NRC update is being presented to the Supreme Court.

The verification of documents is underway and we have completed more than 77 per cent of the verification process, said Patowary assuring that the verification process is so fool proof that no one can get his/her name enrolled with forged documents or legacy data.

The Minister also allayed fears that the name of genuine citizens might get dropped in the complexities of the verification process by stating that ensuring security to all communities is the duty of the Government and genuine citizens need not harbour any fear.

On the other hand, replying to another question raised by AGP MLAs Bhabendra Nath Bharali and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta regarding the Police Training College in Dergaon, Patowary called upon the people not to believe the rumours doing the round in connection with this training institute.

It needs to be mentioned that a section of the media had published the news that the Police Training College in Dergaon was not getting the requisite attention from the Government and that it might be moved to a different place. Dismissing such news as totally baseless, Patowary said that there was no such step taken by the Government and infact the Government was focusing on improving the existing infrastructure in the training institute.
