DIBRUGARH, Aug 13 � The local unit of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) on Monday burnt copies of the Indo-Bangla land swap deal and the effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh near DHSK College here, expressing their anger over giving away Assam land to the neighbouring country.
Similarly, the local BJP Yuva Morcha also expressed its ire over the land swap deal and burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Amollapatty intersection here. Protestors of Yuva Morcha also burnt the effigy of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in protest against the killing of Indian soldiers by the Pakistani Army.
Raha Correspondent adds: The Raha unit of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) burnt the copies of the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill at Raha Chariali to oppose the India-Bangladesh land swap deal.
Sanjoy Kakati, president, Raha unit of AASU, said that the lands that are proposed to be transferred to Bangladesh from Assam and vice versa all belong to Assam.
The demonstrators also shouted slogans against the UPA Government and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
Tinsukia Correspondent adds: In protest against the land swap deal, the Tinsukia regional students� union took out a rally from Tinsukia College campus and burnt the copy of the Indo-Bangla land swap deal at Thana Chariali here. The spokesperson of the student body threatened that it would continue its stir against the land deal and would not allow transfer of Assam�s land to the neighbouring country at any cost.
Meanwhile, the Tinsukia district committee of the Asom Gana Parishad opposed the land swap deal and demanded Central Rule in Assam. The committee also submitted a memorandum to the Governor through the DC.
Tezpur Correspondent adds: The Sonitpur district committee of the AASU burnt the copies of the land swap deal with Bangladesh at Borgola Chowk here protesting against the Government�s anti-people step.
